One of the most common needs in today's manufacturing environment is sludge dewatering equipment and meeting discharge limits. Alar's Flex-O-Star system provides comprehensive wastewater treatment for water-based effluents, slurries and problem wash waters. The design is universal and works with virtually any industrial liquid waste, such as coolants, cleaners, and process waters.

The entire process of the Flex-O-Star dewatering equipment is automatic, which is built on a structural steel skid, pre-piped and pre-wired for easy installation.

Alar's Flex-O-Star dewatering equipment is engineered to incorporate a two-step filtration process: Chemical and mechanical. The first step, chemical treatment, breaks the solids and liquids apart by automatically adding chemical pre-treatments such as pH adjusters, polymers or clays. The second step, mechanical filtration, physically removes the precipitated solid particles from the sludge.

The Flex-O-Star dewatering equipment utilizes several different chemical treatment options specific to your waste stream.

Chemical treatment is a basic procedure. The operator charges the chemical feed tanks with a measured amount of chemicals and filter media. The operator then presses the "all switches to auto" on the control panel.

The Flex-O-Star's dewatering equipment computer-based controls automatically analyze the concentration of contaminants in the wastewater and calculate its optimal treatment. The system's computer determines the proper amount of treatment chemicals, the sequence, time and rate of treatment. The Flex-O-Star operates automatically, with little operator attention, even managing its own clean-up cycles. The operator-friendly touch screen control panel graphically displays the sequence, always showing the current stage of the operation.

Pre-coating is fully automatic.  The operator had previously charged the pre-coat tank with diatomaceous earth.  This slurry of filter media is automatically transferred into the filter pan.  The vacuum draws the filter aid onto the cloth, building up a thick layer.  The water passes through the filter and out a hollow shaft.  This pre-coat operation takes about 15 minutes, and is performed with each batch.  This media is capable of removing particles as minute as ½ of a micron.  That's ½ of 1/1000th of a millimeter.

Prior to filtration, the suspended solids are kept under agitation with the wastewater. This creates a homogenous solution and consistent results. As the wastewater enters the filter pan, the liquid is vacuumed through the filter aid media, while the solids accumulate on the surface. A variable-speed knife advances, removing the solids from the drum's surface with lathe-like precision. The Alar Flex-O-Star is continually self-cleaning with every revolution. This prevents blinding or clogging, thus providing rapid filtration and extremely high filtrate clarity. The solids simply fall off into a standard dumpster.

At the end of a batch, when the treatment tank is empty, the Flex-O-Star filter cleans itself automatically. This clean-up utilizes a spray header and pump that returns the remaining pre-coat and wash-up water back to the treatment tank, where it will be treated with the next batch. When the filter is clean, the unit will shut off. It is now ready for the next batch.

The Alar Flex-O-Star offers functionality, versatility and universal utility. The Flex-O-Star:

  • Filters down to ½ micron
  • Offers a variety of chemical treatment options.
  • Is operator-friendly.
  • Available in both manual and automatic configurations.
  • Is pre-piped, pre-wired and skid-mounted for easy installation.

The Alar Flex-O-Star substantially reduces operating and disposal costs by achieving reductions in volume of 90-95 percent with landfill-ready solids.

For a no cost, no obligation wastewater filtration test, Alar Engineering will show you how the Flex-O-Star can help your specific problems. Send us a five-gallon sample and Alar will perform the filtering and return the clear water and dry solids to you along with qualified recommendations on the handling of your wastewater problem.

Alar's technical staff and field engineers are available to help integrate the Flex-O-Star into your facility and, of course, for on-going support.

In today's environmentally conscience world, water pollution control can no longer be ignored, it's a part of doing business. Alar offers a sensible, effective solution to your wastewater problems.
